Earth Observation (EO) provides critical data and services that power our everyday lives. Recognising the importance of quality Earth intelligence, AstroAgency, funded by Scottish Enterprise and Location Data Scotland, collaborated with over 30 Scottish space-enabled analytics companies in March 2024, highlighting their capabilities in addressing global issues.
Information and statistics were gathered to create a detailed messaging framework for the Scottish Enterprise, enhancing the understanding and communication of EO capabilities. The following case studies demonstrate how space can benefit businesses and communities by utilising this data.

Earth Observation satellites offer an unbeaten vantage point to see the Earth in detail. This technology enables agricultural and forestry organisations to make well-informed decisions on pest control, early disease detection, irrigation, schedule predictions, and more, ensuring proactive practices.
In the evolving energy and built environment sectors, staying up-to-date is essential. Satellites provide continuous monitoring, allowing companies to validate decisions, track progress, and measure impacts effectively.
Climate change is a significant global challenge, and EO satellites are vital in addressing it. With diverse payloads able to be launched on satellites, their capabilities are constantly expanding, ensuring global governments and businesses can monitor potential climate threats and react timely.
Managing the maritime and aquaculture sectors presents a difficult challenge due to necessary remote operations and ever-changing conditions. EO satellites lighten this load by guiding and tracking vessels, offering real-time data to simplify operations.
As the finance and insurance industries face uncertain transitions, prioritising protection and security is essential. Space data supports these sectors by providing historical and current insights, facilitating advanced risk management and asset monitoring.
The information gathered to create these use cases supported the development of clear, concise messaging around EO capabilities in space, suitable for non-technical audiences and industry professionals. The practical uses of EO and satellite technology are essential in addressing real-world challenges and supporting innovation across different sectors.
